NAAVoices was not created from certainty, but from lived experience and professional insight. As I migrate earlier work from the original platform, this post has been reviewed and approved for transfer. It remains true to its original context, with only minor clarity edits where needed. Some moments do not require rewriting to remain honest.

So my back story in a brief. I was born in Yorkshire, mum left abusive husband with two young kids (me being one of them). Moved to mid Wales/Shropshire for support from grandparents. She met my ‘dad’, the man who took me on and raised me as his own.

Joined the military to escape a small-town mentality and the fear of the unknown. Met my ex-husband. Had two wonderful children and seven years of happy marriage. Divorced (moved back towards family), qualified as a nurse, diagnosed with ADHD. The main issues started once I started dating… and from that point on, life has proven challenging. Had a very normal upbringing, with a few dramas as every family has. Seven schools later, college, multiple jobs, a few more college courses, and university. Losses, loves, and events along the way.

A note on identity

NAAVoices was originally founded under a pseudonym to protect my identity. With time and healing I have come to realise that reducing stigma does not come from staying hidden — it comes from openness. Domestic abuse, mental health difficulties, and the need for advocacy happen to people from every walk of life. Speaking openly is an important part of normalising these conversations so that others feel safe to do the same.
