The Therapy Nature Gives Me

Therapy doesn’t always happen in a counselling room.

Life is often a million miles an hour, and I’m regularly asked how I keep going or how I never seem to stop. The truth is, that’s the reality of living with ADHD and PTSD. Keeping busy is often how I cope. Silence leaves space for memories, and with PTSD, silence isn’t always peaceful.

But when I need to reset, this is where I come. Somewhere natural. Somewhere that helps me ground myself.

I’ve said it many times: the body remembers what the mind forgets. In reality, the mind doesn’t forget the events; it just loses track of time. The dates blur, the anniversaries become less obvious, and the conscious reminders fade. But the body still knows. It remembers long before the mind catches up.

So for a few hours today, I’m choosing to appreciate life. To recognise everything we’ve survived, to be grateful for how far I’ve come, and simply to be present.

I’m still here.

The truth is, far too many people never get that chance.

A note on identity

NAAVoices was originally founded under a pseudonym to protect my identity. With time and healing I have come to realise that reducing stigma does not come from staying hidden — it comes from openness. Domestic abuse, mental health difficulties, and the need for advocacy happen to people from every walk of life. Speaking openly is an important part of normalising these conversations so that others feel safe to do the same.
